Bring your energy to make nourishing, local food more accessible in the Bay Area as one of our volunteers
Volunteers play a major role in the success of our food access and education programs, including our Mobile Farmers’ Markets, East Palo Alto Community Farmers’ Market, VeggieRx Nutrition classes, and Collective Roots Community Garden!
As a Fresh Approach Volunteer, you’ll also be able to gain experience working in public health, local food systems, and urban agriculture! Volunteers will receive training on their first day by our staff.
“I love to come to the market and look forward to every Wednesday. We are all one big family here, and I love to be able to help people in the community. I love that I can speak Spanish to community members, and helping them understand our programs is what has kept me coming back to volunteer every season for the past 10 years!Judy Darrell, East Palo Alto Community Farmers’ Market Volunteer
I have loved to see the regularly shoppers over the years and see their families grow.”
Join us at the Collective Roots Community Garden to plant, maintain, and harvest our community and educational garden in East Palo Alto! Volunteers will help maintain our community gardens while learning the basics of organic gardening. Volunteers may also assist with other tasks, including home garden installations, teaching or assisting with gardening workshops, and seed library maintenance.
East Palo Alto Community Farmers’ Market
Help support local family farms while ensuring affordable, healthy food access for the East Palo Alto community. Volunteers will support by helping with outreach and promotion of the East Palo Alto Community Farmers’ Market, assisting with CalFresh / EBT transactions at the information booth, and more.
Mobile Farmers’ Market
Learn more about sustainable agriculture, and healthy eating, by volunteering at one of our Mobile Farmers’ Market stops. Volunteers will support by providing customer service, restocking produce, conducting transactions, collecting surveys, and other support as needed. Volunteers will also help conduct outreach in the community surrounding the Mobile Farmers’ Market stop AND receive $10 worth of fresh produce at the end of their shift!
Learn about preventative healthcare and behavior change strategies by supporting our VeggieRx Nutrition education classes. Volunteers will assist with classroom set-up and clean-up including prepping produce, handing out class materials, conducting surveys with class participants, helping with food demo samples, washing dishes, and taking pictures for social media. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to attend outreach events in the same area as their class.
