Fresh Approach’s Healthy Food Healthy You program provides nutrition education classes and food prep demonstrations to families throughout the Bay Area. Classes include: live demos to show how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a budget; nutritional benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables; techniques to stretch food dollars while keeping your family healthy; and selection and storage methods for handling fresh produce.
The goal of Healthy Food Healthy You is to help low-income individuals and families gain the knowledge and skills they need to make better-informed choices about their diet. Fresh Approach works with partner organizations to provide classes at community-based organizations; Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) centers; and local farmers’ markets.
If you are interested in possibly hosting a Healthy Food/Healthy You class at your organization or in your community, please download and complete our application form. Once we receive your form, we will get back to you within seven working days.
In addition to teaching nutrition lessons at our Healthy Food Healthy You classes, our program can also be found out in the community promoting healthy eating at schools, health clinics, community centers, and wellness fairs. The information provided at these community outreach events includes CalFresh eligibility guidelines, how to use your CalFresh/EBT card at farmers markets, nutrition tips, seasonal recipes, and even cooking demonstrations with tastings. We strive to connect people in our communities to the resources they need in order to live healthy happy lives. In 2015, Healthy Food Healthy You attended 48 community outreach events which reached a total of 9732 individuals.

Thanks to Our Funders
The Healthy Food, Healthy You program began in 2008 with support from the California Market Match Consortium as we conducted community outreach regarding CalFresh use at farmers’ markets and the benefits of the Market Match program, and Cooking Matters helping us conduct nutrition education and cooking classes at community locations around the Bay Area. Programming continued in 2011-2013 with support from California Association of Food Banks; and in 2014-2015 with support from The San Francisco Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente Northern California Region Community Benefit Office as we continued teaching nutrition education classes in Bay Area communities. Kaiser Permanente’s San Mateo Community Benefit Office has supported Healthy Food, Healthy You since 2014 with an exciting incentive that encourages repeat class participants – those who attend three or more classes receive a Kitchen-in-a-Box kit which includes a cutting board, chef’s knife, salad spinner, and vegetable peeler!
