Give Health: by Giving Small Farms a Chance
It’s no secret that small family farms are struggling across the nation.
While the U.S. was home to 6.3 million farms a generation ago, today that number has shrunk by 70% and small farms are still disappearing every day. Urban sprawl, grim economic conditions, and the rise of industrialized mega-farms have caused many farmers to abandon their family business, as it becomes harder and harder to make ends meet.
On top of this, farmers across the nation are aging: the average age of today’s farmer or rancher is 59 years old. Today, many are retiring without a successor, as their children can’t afford to take over the family business.
Family farms offer more than just jobs: they act as natural stewards to the land and the environment, strengthen the local economy, and give rural and urban families a source of healthy, accessible food.
One of the best ways to support local family farms is by shopping at farmers’ markets: at a local farmers’ market in your community, or at our Freshest Cargo mobile farmers market.
Freshest Cargo sources produce exclusively from local farms, which strengthens the local economy and ensures that our customers receive the very freshest seasonal produce.
Buttercup Farms, a small farm in Clayton, CA, began selling to Fresh Approach during the summer of 2015. “Fresh Approach is a wholesale customer for us, and while their payments are lower than retail, we can be sure that we will receive payment,” explains Buttercup Farm Manager Jorie Hanson.
“This makes working with Fresh Approach a big plus for a producer! We also feel really good about partnering with a non-profit organization with such a great mission.”
“We really feel that working with Buttercup Farms has been a win-win-win situation,” says Madaly Alcala, Sales Manager of the East Bay Freshest Cargo route.
“Not only are we helping support small farms and the programs of Fresh Approach, Buttercup’s excellent wholesale prices have a downstream effect, allowing us to offer excellent produce at very affordable prices to our customers who need it most.”
This holiday season, you can help small family farms like Buttercup by supporting Fresh Approach.
