Give Health: by Connecting Communities with Local Produce
Can locally grown strawberries, beets, and kale be the secret to revitalizing the city? “Yes!” says Amanda Elliot, Executive Director of the Richmond Main Street Initiative.
“It’s really important to get folks interested in eating fresh produce, vegetables, and fruit,” explains Amanda. “We know that creating access to healthy foods is an important component to improving our community as a whole.”
According to the USDA, about 1/3 of Richmond residents live in low-income neighborhoods that are more than a mile away from the closest grocery store. This puts them in so-called “food deserts,” making shopping for fresh, healthy food a difficult task.
With so few full-service grocery stores within the city limits, Fresh Approach’s mobile farmers’ market presents Richmond residents with much-needed access to affordable, locally grown, fresh fruits & vegetables.
“We needed another way to get produce and fresh vegetables into the community, and the Freshest Cargo truck is a great way to do that,” explains Amanda. “We’re always looking for opportunities to promote health and wellness, like having the truck stop at public sites and festivals and introducing Fresh Approach to community partners to locate sites for their nutrition and cooking classes.”
Through collaboration and partnership with community organizations like Richmond Main Street Initiative, Fresh Approach can bring nutrition education and healthy, local produce to individuals and families who need it the most. We can build a healthier Bay Area – together.
You can find the Freshest Cargo mobile farmers’ market truck in Richmond every Wednesday, at three different stops. View the full stop schedule here.
